Catanduanes, an island province in the Philippines’ Bicol Region, is known for its rugged coastlines, renowned surf breaks, and tranquil beaches. Often called the “Happy Island,” it is also historically referred to as the “Land of the Howling Winds” because of its location facing the Philippine Sea. The island is a major producer of abaca fiber and is home to many coastal communities whose livelihoods depend on fishing.
The accompanying photographs, provided by RC Makati North, show one of the fishing boats donated to fishermen in Catanduanes following the impacts of recent typhoons. The images were taken during a club visit to the island and illustrate the type of vessel being provided through the initiative.

The project focuses on supporting flood and typhoon
affected fishing communities through the construction of small, non-motorized wooden fishing boats. Each vessel measures approximately three meters in length and is equipped with traditional outriggers. These boats are intended to help fishermen return to their livelihoods and provide a practical means of accessing local fishing grounds.
To maximize community benefit, the boats are being built locally in close coordination with partner clubs in Pangasinan (Northern Luzon) and Catanduanes (Southern Luzon). Local construction reduces transportation costs while also creating temporary employment opportunities for residents involved in the building process.
The estimated cost of constructing each boat is approximately US$170. Organizers hope to provide up to 100 boats in each province, extending support to a significant number of fishing families affected by recent natural disasters.
During a recent board meeting, members agreed to contribute funding equivalent to 10 boats, representing a total donation of US$1,700. This contribution forms part of the broader effort to assist coastal communities as they rebuild and restore their livelihoods.
The initiative demonstrates how targeted, community-based support can help fishing families regain access to essential equipment and strengthen local recovery efforts following severe weather events.
