Eight Rotary Clubs in Macao Work Together to End Polio
Macau SAR, Nov. 6 2021 — Rotary members in Macao participate in a half-day campaign entitled “End Polio Now” to raise awareness, funds, and support to end polio. The same campaign is held simultaneously by Rotary members in Hong Kong and Mongolia. Donations raised through its “End Polio Walk” would go to the End Polio Fund under Rotary International.
Distinguished guests to kick off the “End Polio Walk” from the Macao Tower include Rotary International District 3450 (Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia & the People’s Republic of China – Guangdong Province) District Governor Keith Chow, Area 1 (Macao) Assistant Governor Michael Chan, and Area 9 (Mongolia) Assistant Governor Myagmarjargal Newby. Carnival booths and charity sales are also held at the Outdoor Plaza of Macau Tower.
Local attendees include President of Rotary Club of Macau Matthew Wong, President of Rotary Club of Hou Kuong Nelson Lo, President of Rotary Club of Macau Central Victor Chao, President of Rotary Club of Guia Howard Pang, President of Rotary Club of Macau Islands Santos Chu, President of Rotary Club Amizade, Macau, Hannah Leong, President of Rotary Club of Penha, Macao Anson Lam, President of Rotary Club of Oriental Pearl Macau Annie Fong, and other District officers, Rotarians, and Rotaractors.
In the evening, the eight Clubs will hold the “World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio” charity dinner inside Tromba Rija in Macau Tower. Aside from fund raising, the renown local educator, Principal of Cai Nong School for Children Mr. Wang Guoying, is invited to give a talk on his inspiring personal journey of overcoming Polio and striving to serve the society.
Polio is commonly known as poliovirus. The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis.
Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Today, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9 percent. In the past few years, only two countries have reported cases of polio caused by the wild virus, but no child anywhere is safe until we’ve vaccinated every child. The global pandemic Covid-19 also created new challenges – in 2020 alone, for a total of four months no door-to-door vaccination activities were carried out because of Covid restrictions.
The “End Polio Now” campaign in Macao is co-organized by Rotary Club of Macau, Rotary Club of Hou Kuong, Rotary Club of Macau Central, Rotary Club of Guia, Rotary Club of Macau Islands, Rotary Club Amizade, Macau, Rotary Club of Penha, Macao, Rotary Club of Oriental Pearl Macau, Rotaract Club of Macau, Rotaract Club of University of Macau Student’s Union, Rotaract Club of Macau Central, and Rotaract Club of Amizade Macau. Supporting organizations are Macau Tower Convention & Entertsinmant Centre and Tromba Rija.
