The Urgent Need

In Vietnam, 42 precious lives are lost daily, as newborn mortality remains high at 10 in every 1,000 babies in 2021. Shockingly, 75% of these deaths are preventable, with the Central Highlands alone contributing to 24% of the country’s newborn fatalities. The primary challenge lies in the absence of mandatory newborn resuscitation training and quality control.

Progress So Far (November 2023)

We’ve made significant strides, training 550 health professionals at ERC-approved centres in Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City.

The Solution

The Newborn Life Support (NLS) course, accredited by the European Resuscitation Council (ERC), is the crucial solution. By providing comprehensive resuscitation training and ERC certification to health workers, our goal is to establish four ERC-approved training centres across Vietnam, fostering a self-sustaining faculty of Vietnamese instructors.

Generous Support from the Rotary Club of Macau

During our meeting on 1st August, we featured a detailed update on the UK Neonatal Postgraduate Training program in Vietnam and the Newborn Vietnam project. This included many photos from the Hanoi National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a 5-minute video demonstrating newborn resuscitation techniques to emphasize the program’s impact on local health professionals.

Newborns Vietnam has sent us an official receipt to acknowledge and thank RC Macau for their generous donation of 10 NewBorn Life Support education scholarships in Vietnam. This contribution is equivalent to around 62 million Vietnamese Dong.

In addition, several members have made personal donations towards training for midwives for this project.
